INSPIRATION depicts the life of Patron, Saint Robert of Newminster, aspects of his life and death and the history of St. Robert Parish; its evolution, outreach, community service, and church Sacraments. The painting was a gift to the youth of the parish for their Activity Center. Colors were chosen to correlate with glass blocks within the chapel. I chose to create a triptych as hommage to historical church paintings. Placement of a long window above the painting was taken into account so the light looks like it radiates from above (the Heavens). This painting took a year and three months to create, during that time I prayed for God's guidance.

I created this piece especially for the Renewed in Word, Faith, and Grace Juried Art Show competition for 6 local churches in Grand Rapids, Michigan, celebrating The Reformation in Fall 2017. After I got the email entry notification, I reflected for a few days. Then I awoke one night with the image in a dream. I got up and sketched it in the dark with what I discovered in the morning was a dull pencil! But I vividly recalled the idea, which was in black and white.
The image combines many religious symbols all intertwined. God's love, and sacrifice is portrayed in full radiating outreach. The dove continues to be a symbol of hope and peace for our conflicted world. I deliberately pierced the heart and the wing with the cross thinking of Jesus' (and our) suffering. I used the wood because Jesus was a carpenter, and I carved into the wood in a symbolic gesture of permanence. The decision to use the enamel paint was an interesting choice. I liked the intense glossy colors contrasted with the wood and the natural grain. The enamel keeps the entire piece bright, bold, and intense, with the red conveying the look of blood. I hope this piece resonates with people.
